When you reply to a specific comment that someone left for you, use the 'quote' link under their profile picture. That way, they're able to receive your response using the 'Where I'm Quoted' link on their homepage (assuming they are silver or gold).

People are more likely to keep visiting if they know that you reply to their comments .

And yeah, I'd take the jokers out of my hand if I had something better to replace them with .
